What are your biggest struggles with SEO?

Nathan Olsen:

One of the biggest hurdles is business owners are reluctant that SEO is going to work for them.  Let’s face it search engine optimization doesn’t have the squeaky clean reputation that you would hope for in such a professional field.

I have seen lots of companies that I can clearly see what’s wrong and how to fix it.  Yet, they are so skeptical from previous experience they are scared to take that leap.

Another problem I have encountered is companies who are dead set in their ways.  They have a terrible website design and have bug after bug, issue after issue, and continue to want to band aid the problems over and over.  Thus creating more work for us to try to rank such crap and cost them more in the long run.

Had one just a couple months ago who rather pay more per month than to split the extra into 2 months and pay for itself yet they declined the upgrade which literally would had cost them nothing more!  It’s frustrating (update 1.28.20 this company ranks worst with the company they hired after me and they even tried using black hat spam techniques that is against Google TOS).

Do you have any solid advice for people needing SEO, or the benefits of online marketing and why SEO?

Nathan Olsen:

First off, you should always see where they rank for their own terms you can simply ask what is your best keyword or phrases and rankings.  Ask for references and to see a portfolio.  This will eliminate the majority of the agencies who can talk to the talk but can’t walk the walk.  Why SEO?  We now live in a digital era and newspapers, yellowpages, and other print options are on the decline and mobile searches online including voice search is increasing everyday!  This is the future and where the next generations are going to look for businesses.

How do you educate people why SEO is more than just rankings?

I am not just an SEO specialist I am a marketer.  When it comes to marketing it goes well beyond rankings.  You can literally rank #1 for thousands of terms and land absoutely zero jobs or make nothing in terms of pounds.  A true SEO agency understands that you need to focus on conversion, catchy phrases, and at the end of the day all that a business owner cares about is “did the phone ring” and did revenue increase?  And ultimately are we getting a return on our investment.  If the agency doesn’t focus on these and only cares about rankings the only road ahead is failure.
